In Memory of HENRY ADAMS who took his flight from the Dragon persecution in Devonshire in England, and alighted with eight sons, near Mount Wollaston. One of the sons returned to England, and after taking time to explore the country, four removed to Medfield and the neighboring towns; two to Chelmsford. One only, Joseph, who lies here at his left hand, remained here, who was an original proprietor in the township of Briantree, incorporated in 1639. This stone and several others have been placed in this yard, by a great-great grandson, from a veneration of the Piety, humility, simplicity, prudence, patience, temperance, frugality, industry and perseverance, of his Ancestors, in hopes of Recommending an imitation of their virtures to their posterity. ... Wilson who was a physician as well as a minister and had her under his care.
During the battle, a gun in the hands of Capt. John Jacob accidentally
discharged in the room below and the ball passed through her as she lie in
her bed and resulted in her death the next day.

Only First Lady born outside the United States, Louisa Catherine Adams did not come to this country until four years after she had married John Quincy Adams. Political enemies sometimes called her English. She was born in London to an English mother, Catherine Nuth Johnson, but her father was American--Joshua Johnson, of Maryland--and he served as United States consul after 1790.

A career diplomat at 27, accredited to the Netherlands, John Quincy developed his interest in charming 19-year-old Louisa when they met in London in 1794. Three years later they were married, and went to Berlin in course of duty. At the Prussian court she displayed the style and grace of a diplomat's lady; the ways of a Yankee farm community seemed strange indeed in 1801 when she first reached the country of which she was a citizen. Then began years divided among the family home in Quincy, Massachusetts, their house in Boston, and a political home in Washington, D.C. When the Johnsons had settled in the capital, Louisa felt more at home there than she ever did in New England.

She left her two older sons in Massachusetts for education in 1809 when she took two-year-old Charles Francis to Russia, where Adams served as Minister. Despite the glamour of the tsar's court, she had to struggle with cold winters, strange customs, limited funds, and poor health; an infant daughter born in 1811 died the next year. Peace negotiations called Adams to Ghent in 1814 and then to London. To join him, Louisa had to make a forty-day journey across war-ravaged Europe by coach in winter; roving bands of stragglers and highwaymen filled her with "unspeakable terrors" for her son. Happily, the next two years gave her an interlude of family life in the country of her birth.

Appointment of John Quincy as Monroe's Secretary of State brought the Adamses to Washington in 1817, and Louisa's drawing room became a center for the diplomatic corps and other notables. Good music enhanced her Tuesday evenings at home, and theater parties contributed to her reputation as an outstanding hostess.

But the pleasure of moving to the White House in 1825 was dimmed by the bitter politics of the election and by her own poor health. She suffered from deep depression. Though she continued her weekly "drawing rooms," she preferred quiet evenings--reading, composing music and verse, playing her harp. The necessary entertainments were always elegant, however; and her cordial hospitality made the last official reception a gracious occasion although her husband had lost his bid for re-election and partisan feeling still ran high.

Louisa thought she was retiring to Massachusetts permanently, but in 1831 her husband began 17 years of notable service in the House of Representatives. The Adamses could look back on a secure happiness as well as many trials when they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at Quincy in 1847. He was fatally stricken at the Capitol the following year; she died in Washington in 1852, and today lies buried at his side in the family church at Quincy.

The Adams Family was a race of " sturdy yeomen who lived for generations in
Barton St.David, Sumersetshire England, residing in simple stone, thatched
cottages. Henry married Edith Squire from the adjoining parish of Charlton
Mackrell. Their residence continued in Barton St. David for several years.

Henry and Edith had nine children, eight sons and one daughter, 1-5 were born
in Barton St. David and 6-9 were born in Kingweston, Sumersetshire.

There were several factors which influenced Henry to emigrate to America. Not
the least of which was the prior emigration of many of his friends including
Edith's sister Ann & family. In 1632/3 Henry took his wife and eight children
(Jonathan Adams remained in England a dozon years longer) and emigrated to New
England where he was granted (24 Feb. 1639/40) by the town of Boston, a lot of
40 acres at Mount Wollaston (Braintree, now Quincy)

Henry was a farmer and a maltster in England, an occupation which stayed with
the family in America and into the 19th century.


Henry and all his known ancestors were Yeomen famers from Barton St. David, Somersetshire, England. Henry was also a maltster.371

A 1693 bible that likely belonged to a child of his daughter Ursula lists his birth as 21 Jan 1583. The data in the bible, except for easily explainable typo errors, comports where possible with available vital records. The data also compares with the common estimate of 1583, based on Henry's service as executor of his father's will in 1604.

Henry married at Charlton Mackrell, a neighboring parish to Barton St. David. (He did not, as is sometimes said, marry "Charlotte Mackrell".) His wife Edith Squire was the daughter of the blacksmith Henry Squire. Henry shows up as co-executor of his brother John's will in 1609, the same year he signed his marriage bond in 1609. His son Thomas was baptized in Barton St. David in 1612. Then between 1614 and 1622 he moved to the ajoining parish of Kingweston where his youngest children were baptized. His last child Edward was baptized there in 1629.

Henry was probably influenced by Edith's sister Ann Purchase to come to New England, since the local ministers were not Puritans. The year of his removal is fixed by a deposition in 1656 by his son, John ADAMS, who stated that he had known a certain field in Cambridge (MA) since 1638. The earliest record of Henry in New England was 24 Feb 1639/40, when he was granted 40 acres of Braintree (now Quincy), for a family of ten heads; himself, wife Edith, sons; Henry, Thomas, Samuel, Peter, John, Joseph and Edward, and dau Urusla. His son Jonathan remained in England a dozen years longer.

Henry's widow Edith (SQUIRE) ADAMS married 2) John FUSSELL of Weymouth, Norfolk, MA where he bought the house of Richard SYLVESTER (1640) of the "Mary and John" of 1630. John FUSSELL born abt 1577) was burned in this house by Indians abt 1676. He may have come from county Somersetshire, England whre the name flourished and been acquainted the ADAMS'es and
SQUIRE'es. They had a child, Mary FUSSELL, who married Nathaniel ADAMS in 1677. (History of Weymouth, 3:245). Thre is another ADAMS memorial in the Stair Hall in New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston:

"A memorial to HENRY ADAMS founder of Braintree the ancestor of two presidents also to his sixth son JOHN ADAMS baptized at Kingweston England 4 Dec. 1622 settled at Menotomy Cambridge where he died 1706 created by their descendant Edward Dean Adams 1924."

Henry Adams was known popularly as The Founder of New England, probably because of the extraordinary number (89) of his grandchildren.371

Gravestone in his memory erected by Pres. Adams in Hancock Cemetery in Braintree. Henry is likely buried there, as it was the old burying ground for Briantree, but had no stone originally. His son Joseph, grandson Joseph, Joseph's son Pres. John, and Pres. John Q. are also buried in the family plot.

Samuel raised the alarm when Indians attacked Medfield in 1676. 1680; Medfield, MA voted to grant 50 acres of land for a mill on the Charles River, and to exempt the mill from taxes for seven years. It was built at the Bent, now Rockville by; John Metcalf Sr., John Partridge Sr., Samuel Morse, Edward Adams, Joseph Allen, John Metcalf Jr., Nathaniel Allen, George Barber, Ephraim Wight, Samuel Barber, John Plympton, and Benjamin Wheelock. From "History of the Towns of Sherborn and Holiston," by Rev. Abner Morse in 1856: Isaac Bullard, settled in Sherborn, now North part of Holliston, drew 1715 and 1730, in Douglas, 70 acres. He made his will July 6, 1742, giving the improvement of his house and land to his wife Sarah during the minority of his son, Isaac, after which Isaac should occupy one half until her decease, when an equal division of what had been his home lands, including 70 acres priviously given to his son Samuel, should be made to the two sons. He also mentioned his three daughters, all then living and married. Sarah and Samuel were made executors, and presented their account Sept. 1743. His estate was appraised Sept. 15, 1742, but his will (see Mid. Prob.) seems not to have been proved. Sarah was appointed , Aug. 13, 1742, guardian to her son Isaac, then in his 16th Year.

Stephen-5 (Obidiah-4, John-3, Edward-2, Henry-1) Adams, born in the New Grant in
1729, lived and died in the place where he was born. Obidiah's house was on Adams Street, north side, about halfway between Winthrop and Summer Streets, a site now marked by some lilacs and bushes, and for many years was known as the Groehl place. In 1773, Stephen married Molly Littlefield.
He served in the Revolution.
Stephen Adams was the father of Laban Adams who ran the famous Lamb Tavern in Boston and later started the well-known Adams House. He was the grandfather of author William T. Adams - Oliver Optic - and has many notable descendants. When tea was prohibited in the Bay Colony, Stephen's wife had some of the contraband. She so desired some that one day she took some boiling water to the attic of her house, brewed some of the tabooed luxury, and quietly drank it.
The chair that she used in the family pew in the old meeting house was given to
the Medway Historical Society by Herbert Hixon, and bears the initials M A cut in the back.
Stephen Adams died in 1795, and his widow died in 1813.
