      JOSEPH BARBER: In 1829 ( age 25) Joseph was a Shoemaker in Hollingworth, Cheshire. He is listed in Dukinfield (Lancs., near Stalybridge) in 1832 at Cross Leech Street living with his wife Elizabeth, age 30, and their children, Sarah age 21, Thomas age 18, William age 15, Miles age 10, Josephine age 7 and Elizabeth age 4. Again in 1841 in the Manchester and Salford Directory for Stalybridge at the same address - and he is a SHOEMAKER.

      [HOLLINGWORTH is a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale Parish, Macclesfield Hundred (SK 0196). In 1936 it became part of the civil parish of Longdendale, and in 1974 the area was transferred to the county of Greater Manchester. The population was 910 in 1801, St. Michael was the ancient parish church for Hollingworth.]

      SADDLEWORTH is made up of three villages that all seem to go under the collective name of Saddleworth

      MOSSLEY BROW is to the west of Saddleworth and Mossley is now a part of Greater Manchester as well.

      English Census: 1851 - Joseph age 47 yrs old, a cordwainer (shoemaker) lived with his wife Elizabeth age 43 yrs old a weaver of cotton and family, Sarah age 21 yrs old a weaver of cotton, Thomas age 18 yrs old, a weaver of cotton, Ann age 13 yrs old an errand girl, Miles age 10 yrs old a cotton piecer ( pieced together broken threads) Josephine age 7 yrs. old and Elizabeth age 4 yrs. old , all living at 42 Ridgehill Lane, Parish of Ashton under line, town of Stalybridge, England

      Federal Census -1860- Joseph age 56 worked as a shoemaker lived in town of Smithfield, RI with his wife Elizabeth age 52 , son Thomas age 27 yrs old a cotton weaver, his wife Mary Ann age 27 a cotton weaver, their son Joseph age 3 yrs old , a daughter Ann age 21 yrs old, a cotton weaver , a daughter Elizabeth age 13 yrs old, and a son Joseph age 9 yrs old.

      Federal Census - 1880 - Joseph was living with his son Thomas. Elizabeth was not mentioned (See Thomas)
